Kilkenny: Moving Groups by Road

Kilkenny is about 1.5 hours from Dublin Airport on the M9, a clean single leg for a group landing in the morning. The city is small enough that hotel-to-venue moves are short; the planning is in where the vehicle waits.

From Dublin Airport

The run is about 130 km. Collection at Dublin is from the Zone 16 coach park, so allow time for the group to reach it after baggage reclaim before the clock starts on the road leg. Cork Airport is the other option for southern arrivals.

City-centre hotels line the Medieval Mile, with more around John Street near MacDonagh Station. Country-house hotels on the outskirts are popular for offsites and weddings; each adds a leg to evenings in town, which is worth pricing at the outset.

Where coaches wait

Coaches park along Castle Road on its east side, on the approach to Kilkenny Castle. Larchfield takes the overflow when it is busy, and Kilkenny County Council has more coach spaces at the Abbey Quarter. Kilkenny Castle is at the top of the Medieval Mile and St Canice's Cathedral at the north end, so a walking programme between them runs one way: the vehicle drops at one end and collects at the other. Tell us which way round the group is walking.

Hurling days

UPMC Nowlan Park holds about 27,000. On a big Kilkenny fixture the roads around it fill, so move hotel transfers and dinner pickups away from throw-in and the final whistle where you can.

Questions

Can we add a visit on the way from the airport?

It is possible, but a long arrival day limits it. Glendalough, about 1.75 hours from Kilkenny, usually works better as a day of its own. Name any stop before the quote so the driver's hours are planned around it.

Which short trips fit around a Kilkenny conference?

Jerpoint Abbey (about 20 minutes) and Dunmore Cave (about 15) fit a morning. For an afternoon, Waterford or the Rock of Cashel is around 50 minutes each way.

What should we send for a Kilkenny quote?

Flights, passenger and luggage numbers, the hotel, venue times, and any evening movements between an outlying hotel and the city. We book a licensed, insured operator for the schedule you send.

Does Kilkenny work as a day out from a Dublin conference?

Yes. It is about 125 km from Dublin, roughly 1.5 hours each way, which leaves room for the castle, lunch and the Smithwick's Experience on Parliament Street before an evening back in the capital.
