Accessible Minibus: Wheelchair Spaces, Seats and Boarding
An accessible minibus keeps a mixed group together when one or more passengers travel in a wheelchair. The layout, not the headline seat count, decides whether it fits your group.
Configurations
Expect 10 to 16 seats plus wheelchair spaces. Mercedes designs the Sprinter Mobility for passengers with restricted mobility; one Sprinter configuration offers 10+1 seats plus a single wheelchair space. Every wheelchair space takes room that would otherwise hold seats or luggage, so luggage capacity is limited. State the number of wheelchair users travelling at the same time, and whether any will transfer to a seat.
Sample models
Typical models in this class, as run by the licensed, insured operators we book. The operator confirming your schedule decides the exact vehicle.
Shown here are standard minibuses: no lift, ramp or wheelchair positions appear in these photos. Note the access your passengers need in the request so the operator can confirm it.

When a smaller vehicle is enough
Where only one wheelchair user and one companion travel, an accessible hackney under NTA licence may suit better. Its design has to accommodate a wheelchair user and at least one other adult, and the fare is agreed when it is booked.
At a glance
- Seats: 10-16 plus wheelchair spaces
- Luggage: Limited; wheelchair spaces reduce luggage room
Groups it serves and checks to ask for
Typical uses are accessible airport transfers, care-home and day-centre outings, older travellers and pilgrimage groups. When the bus carries only vulnerable passengers, such as care-home residents, the driver must be Garda vetted. With more than 8 passengers, the operator needs a Road Passenger Transport Operator Licence.
Send each pickup and drop point with its access details: kerb height, step-free routes and where the vehicle can pull in. Ask the operator to describe the boarding arrangement on the quote.
Questions
How many wheelchair spaces are there?
It varies. One common Sprinter layout has a single space with 10+1 seats; other layouts offer more spaces and fewer seats.
What should the request include?
Total passengers, how many travel in wheelchairs at once, chair types, walking aids, pickup addresses with access notes, and the timings. The quote then states the layout offered.
Is there room for suitcases?
Limited. Wheelchair spaces reduce luggage room, so list bags and mobility equipment with the request.
Is a smaller accessible vehicle available for two people?
Yes. An NTA-licensed wheelchair-accessible hackney is designed for a minimum of one wheelchair user and one adult companion.
